Frequently Asked Questions

Why isn’t my cog loading?

  • Make sure the cog file is in src/cogs/ and listed in botbox.conf
  • Make sure the cog’s env matches one of the values in your ENVIRONMENTS variable (in .env or Doppler)
  • Run botbox config sync to update your config

How do I update BotBox?

It depends on how you installed it.

botbox update

botbox update shells out to go install, so it only works on a Go-installed copy. Prebuilt binaries are replaced by hand from the releases page.

Can I use BotBox without the TUI?

Yes. Every command runs headless when you pass --headless or any value flag, which makes BotBox usable from scripts and CI.

sh
botbox create --name MyBot --description "A really cool bot" --author "Your Name" --guild GUILD_ID

See Headless Mode.

Where do my bot's logs go?

To logs/bot.log and to stdout at the same time. The directory comes from LOG_DIR and the level comes from LOG_LEVEL, both read by src/utils/logger.py. Files rotate at 5 MB with 5 backups kept.

My project has no requirements.txt or .gitignore

Those are generated as of 2.6.3, and src/utils/logger.py as of 2.7.0. Older projects don't have them and botbox project upgrade only touches botbox.conf, so add them by hand. requirements.txt needs discord.py>=2.3 and python-dotenv>=1.0.

Can a command open a popup form?

Yes, that's a modal command. Pick modal as the command type in botbox add, or set "Type": "modal" with a Fields array in headless mode. You get up to five text inputs per modal. See Modal Commands.

Can I use BotBox with existing bots?

Yes! Use botbox init in your project directory to add BotBox config and structure.

How do I manage secrets securely?

Use Doppler for secret management, or keep your .env file out of version control.
