Update Command

The botbox update command checks for and installs the latest version of BotBox from GitHub releases.

Usage

sh
botbox update

What Happens?

  • Checks for the latest release on GitHub
  • Cleans the Go module cache so a stale cached copy is not reused
  • Installs the update with go install github.com/choice404/botbox/v2@<version>
  • Runs the newly installed binary with --version to confirm it reports the expected version
  • Updates cli.version in your global config
āš ļø WARNING
botbox update installs with go install, so it requires Go and it only updates a Go-installed copy. If you installed with Homebrew, run brew upgrade botbox instead. If you installed a prebuilt binary, download the new archive from the releases page.

Automatic Updates

BotBox checks for updates on every command unless the command is running headless. Two global config keys control this.

sh
# Stop the update notifications
botbox config set -g cli.check_updates false

# Install updates automatically when one is found
botbox config set -g cli.auto_update true

Headless runs skip the update check entirely, so pipelines never stall on the GitHub API.

Example Output

plaintext
šŸ” Checking for updates...
šŸ“¦ Update available: 2.6.3 → 2.7.0
šŸ”— Release notes: https://github.com/choice404/botbox/releases/tag/v2.7.0
šŸŽ‰ Update completed! Please restart your terminal or run 'hash -r' to refresh the command cache.

Troubleshooting

If you see a "command not found" error after updating, make sure your Go bin directory is in your PATH.

If the update warns that it installed to one path while the botbox you are running lives at another, you have two copies installed. Check your PATH order or delete the older copy.
